As this pregnancy progresses, I feel myself slowly withdrawing into a little shell of safety. Less people, fewer outings, low drama movies and books, and now the need to minimize the time spent on social media.
I took my longest social media break about this time in my last pregnancy. It was great, but I do feel like there’s a bit of a black hole of what actually happened during those months, since I record so much via photos. While I don’t believe the internet adds anything to my experiences, I do believe it can be a nice way to compile, share and remember what I have experienced. I like that part of it, so I figured I’d use this blog as my recording method while off the facebooks and the instagrams. Now more than ever do I value the daily and weekly memories of how life looks with my girl.
We are not big into Halloween but for some reason Sloane loves playing “ghost” these days (we run and hide from the ghost, unless it’s a nice ghost, then we are friends with the ghost) so it was a convenient time to make a little ghostly craft. Googly eyes have got to be the best craft item I’ve purchased. They make everything cute.
We went out for halloween around our block, and it was so much fun. I’ve always felt pretty ambivilent toward’s halloween but seeing Sloane have so much fun was awesome (now I see why people take their kids to Disneyland ?). I was also excited about seeing a couple more faces on our street. It really is a rare opportunity to get to smile and chat with some of them, even briefly, and I didn’t want to pass up that chance. We have some great people around us!
I’ve been stewing in Brené for the last couple weeks, and while she has a million good things to be applied, that quote on parenting really stuck with me. It encourages and challenges me to keep growing, keep being introspective, and keep pursuing the things that I love.
The temperature finally dropped and we got a big dump of snow over the last week, so we’ve been gearing up and steeling ourselves for the coming winter months. The first day of snow, Sloane spent 5 minutes outside before getting fed up. The second day we made it 10 minutes. Keep this progress up and we might actually enjoy winter a little bit….
This morning the sun was shining, the sky was blue, and the snow was sparkly and enticing, and though it was still -10 I couldn’t resist giving an outdoor run a shot. There hasn’t been a melt yet so I felt comfortable in the fact that it wouldn’t be icy, so I put on 1000 layers and hit the road. It was awesome! My top half was actually a little too warm during the second half of the run. It was nice to get a feel for what works and what doesn’t, even if I don’t repeat this many more times. I’ve been losing some mental motivation in my runs these days so mixing it up and enjoying the beauty around me definitely gave me a boost.
We also took an adventure downtown to check out Tamarind, a totally vegetarian (possibly vegan) Vietnamese restaurant. It was awesome being able to order all the things! While the spicy sate soup didn’t hit the spot like it’s meat counterpart does, the Pad Thai was excellent, and the tofu in both dishes was really tasty.
